Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is endorsing her state Capitol co-worker, Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, for the U.S. Senate.
Bondi, a Republican, said she is supporting the conservative Lopez-Cantera for what is to be a “vital” election in 2016.
“Carlos has a proven record of success on behalf of Floridians who seek less taxes, less government and more job creation,” she said in a prepared statement. “I have full confidence that if given the opportunity, he will continue this work as a critical voice in the U.S. Senate.”
Lopez-Cantera replied that he was honored to receive an endorsement from his friend.
“She’s led the battle in Florida against Obamacare and fights every day to protect our rights and freedoms,” he said. “I know Pam’s help in this campaign will make a real difference in getting our message out to the voters of Florida.”
In the Republican primary, Lopez-Cantera will face conservative North Florida U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, with U.S. Reps. David Jolly and Jeff Miller also considering runs for Marco Rubio’s open seat. On the Democratic side, U.S. Reps. Alan Grayson of Orlando and Patrick Murphy of Jupiter as well as attorney Pam Keith have also declared in the race.
