I had an interesting Twitter exchange Thursday regarding whether or not the Lenny Curry mayoral budget would provide the necessary $900,000 for the continued operation Mayport Ferry. I was told Thursday by an administration source that it was, in fact, in there. Yet it was easy to miss.
So easy, in fact, that I missed it. And so did a couple of other solid journalists. Confusion reigned on #jaxpol, more so than usual.
Soon thereafter, I got a message from former council candidate and current Planning Commission member Lisa King, one of the smartest people on the local political scene, who had posed the original question about whether the money was there and not.
“I confirmed it’s there. Non departmental expenditures schedule shows $900k increase for JTA over last year under sub fund level activities. It will be in budget book available Monday,”
Translation: no need to worry, for that determined cadre of Mayport Ferry advocates.
It would have been an enormous surprise for the administration not to fund the ferry. One of the strongholds that pushed Lenny Curry to victory were the Beaches communities.
We will have more on the Lenny Curry budget in the upcoming days, including full coverage of Curry’s budget address Monday morning at City Council.
Thanks to King, as ever, for her vigilance.
