As Barack Obama proved in 2008, it clearly pays to campaign in as many states as possible in a contested primary.

So while the political campaigns are centered on early voting states like Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, the Providence Journal reported Wednesday that a Rhode Islanders’ for Marco Rubio for President group has been formed.

The paper reports that it will be chaired by Gary Sasse, a one-time top aide in the administration of former Rhode Island Gov. Donald Carcieri, and marks the first Republican candidate to form an organized campaign in Rhode Island.

In a prepared statement Sasse said, “I, and my fellow committee members, are excited to endorse Marco Rubio for president today. Senator Rubio is an outstanding leader and a compelling communicator of our shared principles who can unite our nation and party. His policies for economic development and education will benefit all Rhode Island families. We look forward to recruiting additional supporters and organizing on his behalf in Rhode Island in the months ahead.”

The Rhode Island Republican presidential primary takes place on April 26. Nineteen delegates will be at stake.
