Broward County commissioners say they intend to soften laws to lure Uber and other app-based ridesharing services back to the county.
Multiple media outlets report that commissioners voted 6-2 on Tuesday to have an Uber-friendly law drafted for a September vote.
Commissioners will hold a public hearing in September to finalize the changes.
Commissioners say they received heavy backlash from the public after Uber stopped serving Broward on July 31. The company withdrew because it says it objected to the county’s new transportation network company law, including a requirement that drivers’ names be submitted to the county’s public record.
A proposal from Commissioner Mark Bogen would remove that requirement, as well as allow companies like Uber to register its own drivers and vehicles, or allow the county to do it.
