Florida lawmakers can’t agree on new congressional maps

The Legislature is still divided on the last day of a Special Session to redraw congressional districts.

The Senate on Friday said it was prepared to extend the Special Session after not being able to come to an agreement with the House on satisfying a Florida Supreme Court order to redraw congressional districts.

The Supreme Court ruled in July that the current districts don’t meet a voter-approved constitutional amendment that requires districts be compact and not drawn to benefit a political party or incumbents. The session began Aug. 10.

The Supreme Court said the GOP-dominated Legislature deliberately drew districts that benefit Republicans. This Legislature also held a Special Session in June to resolve a budget dispute and will hold another Session in October to redraw Senate districts.
