The Sunshine State added 15,100 private sector jobs in August, placing third among all states, according to a report released Thursday by payroll company ADP.

ADP estimates 14,300 of the new jobs went into service industries, with goods-producing industries adding the other 800 jobs. The industry breakdown puts 3,700 new jobs in trade, transportation and utilities, 2,800 jobs in professional and business services, 500 jobs in manufacturing and 300 jobs in mining and construction.

The numbers are an improvement from July, which saw 13,700 jobs head to Florida though they are still shy of the state’s six-month average of 16,260 jobs added a month.

The only states to add more jobs last month were California and Texas, both of which have higher populations than Florida. California added 32,300 jobs in August while Texas saw a gain of 18,100.

The South, which includes 15 states and Washington, D.C., took home top honors among the four regions tracked in the ADP report with a 70,000-job gain. The West added 57,000 jobs, while the Midwest and the Northeast regions gained 35,000 and 29,000 jobs, respectively.

Put out with Moody’s Analytics, the ADP report uses a company’s payroll data and Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers to track changes in nonfarm private employment. ADP releases the regional employment report each month, with September numbers scheduled for an Oct. 7 release.
