The Florida Democratic Party will be holding their State Convention at Disney World during Holloween weekend, and party officials announced on Monday that the event will kick off with a speech by Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy.
“We are excited to announce that Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy will join us as we kick off the Florida’s Democratic Party’s 2015 State Convention on Friday, October 30th,” FDP Chair Allison Tant said in a statement. “Governor Malloy, who will host the convention’s opening night celebration, has established a winning record of standing strong for the Democratic priorities of growing the middle class, improving our public schools, and protecting the environment. We look forward to another successful state convention and I’m thrilled to have Governor Malloy on our team as we head into 2016.”
Malloy was initially elected governor of Connecticut in 2010, becoming the first Democrat to be elected in the Nutmeg State in 24 years. He was subsequently reelected last year, and will chair the Democratic Governors Association in 2016, meaning he’ll be frequently traveling around the country over the next year to try to see as many Democrats elected governor.
“I’m thrilled to be joining Chair Tant and such a strong group of Florida Democrats to kick of the 2015 State Convention,” Malloy said in a statement. “As the country’s largest swing state, Florida will play a critical role in 2016 in keeping the White House and winning important House and Senate races. I’m proud to help Florida Democrats kick off a successful convention heading into such an important election for the future of our country.”
Although he doesn’t get as much ink as other Democrats, Malloy has a series of liberal accomplishments in his nearly five years in office – the first-in-the-nation paid sick leave law, a repeal of the death penalty, a historic tax hike on millions (which led Rick Scott to travel there to try to recruit some corporations) and an extremely tough gun law.
The Florida Democratic Party’s 2015 State Convention will take place at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club in Lake Buena Vista from October 30th to November 1st. For more information, please visit FloridaDems.org/convention.
