Federal transportation officials say they will give $93.4 million to help extend central Florida’s commuter rail to the southern section of the metro area.
The Federal Transit Administration on Monday said an agreement with the SunRail commuter service will help extend the line by more than 17 miles into Osceola County.
The second phase of construction for SunRail will extend from south of Orlando through Kissimmee and Poinciana in Osceola County.
That will open up rail service to workers who have jobs at Orlando International Airport, the area’s theme parks and the Lake Nona medical research neighborhood south of the airport.
The federal funding makes up about half of the $187 million projected cost for the project. The rest of the money will come from the state and local governments.
