A group that represents free and low-cost health clinics in Florida has hired Nick Duran to be its new executive director.

The Florida Association of Free and Charitable Clinics announced the hire in a Monday news release. Duran replaces Mark Cruise as the organization’s top staffer.

The 2-year-old state association counts Community Health Outreach in Jacksonville, Center for Family Health in Tampa, and Downtown Orlando Clinic among its members, according to its website.

“As Florida’s free and charitable clinics and networks continue to fill critical gaps in health care for vulnerable populations, Nick’s leadership experience, expertise and passion will prove invaluable,” association board Chairwoman Marisel Losas said in a prepared statement.

Duran was born and grew up in South Florida. He graduated from The University of Florida and New York Law School. Duran lives in Miami with his wife Danielle and their two children.

More from the news release:

Duran most recently served as the Florida State Director for Enroll America, the nation’s leading health care enrollment coalition which brought together community and health organizations, faith leaders, and businesses to help over a million Floridians receive new health coverage. Under Duran’s leadership, the organization used a data- and metrics-based outreach and education program that engaged thousands of volunteers and developed a diverse set of hundreds of partners across non- and for-profit sectors.

“For years free and charitable clinics have been leaders in helping assist those Floridians slipping through the cracks in our current health care system. They will continue to play a critical role in providing quality, cost-effective healthcare services at little or no charge to low-income, uninsured and underserved Floridians,” Duran said. “I’m thankful to the board for my opportunity to lead the Florida Association of Free and Charitable Clinics’ representation of its invaluable member clinics and networks.”

Previously, Duran worked with The Children’s Movement of Florida overseeing its health advocacy and policy initiatives aimed at decreasing barriers and increasing access to health care for all of Florida’s children. Before that, he practiced law at Lydecker Diaz.
