Tallahassee-based law firm Meenan P.A. announced the addition of two new lawyers for their legislative and regulatory practice.
Stephen C. Burgess will work in an “Of Counsel” capacity; Sarah Niewold is the firm’s newest associate.
With more than 35 years’ experience working with the Florida Legislature and executive branches, Burgess is a former consumer advocate for the Florida Department of Financial Services (DFS). During his time at DFS, he was consumer advocate on three separate occasions, most recently under Florida’s Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater.
Burgess also spent five years as staff director of the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee, and 15 years as deputy public counsel, where he represented utility consumers before the Public Service Commission and Florida appellate courts.
“Steve is widely respected for his expertise in both the insurance regulatory, utility regulation and legislative arenas, and Meenan P.A.’s clients will be fortunate to benefit from his extensive knowledge and skills,” Managing Shareholder Tim Meenan said in a prepared statement. “We have worked with Steve for many years on some of the most challenging issues facing our state, and saw this as an excellent opportunity to bring our resources together on behalf of select clients.”
A recent graduate of Florida State University College of Law, Niewold interned with the Florida Association of Health Plans as a legislative intern and law clerk. She also worked as a legislative and legal intern with Capitol Insight.
Meenan P.A. specializes in regulatory, legislative and litigation services with a staff of 26 that includes 12 lawyers. The firm’s chief focus is on insurance regulation and the areas of property and casualty, life and health insurance.
