Florida gained 15,400 private sector jobs last month according to data released Wednesday by payroll company ADP.

The new jobs put the Sunshine State in third-place among the 50 states according to the ADP Regional Employment Report. Only California, which added 23,000 jobs, and Texas, which saw a 17,200-job gain, added more than Florida.

The new jobs mainly came to the service industry, with just 500 positions heading to goods producing industries. The breakdown estimates Florida lost 300 manufacturing jobs last month, offset by a gain of 800 jobs in the natural resources, mining and construction industries. In the service sector, professional and business services companies added 2,600 jobs and trade, transportation and utility companies added 2,800 jobs.

The gain comes in slightly below September, which saw a gain of 15,700 jobs, and far below the 20,050 jobs added in October 2014. Still, the South continued adding more jobs than other regions.

The region, which includes 17 states and Washington, D.C., added 73,000 jobs last month. Western states again added the second most in the regional breakdown, with 48,000 jobs. Midwestern states added 37,000 while the nine Northeastern states added the fewest at 24,000.

ADP, with help from Moody’s Analytics, releases the Regional Employment Report monthly. The results are based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics as well as ADP’s own in-house data. The next report is scheduled for release Dec. 9.
