Attorney and Democratic politico Emily Slosberg opened a campaign account Monday in SD 25, a Palm Beach-area Senate district currently held by Sen. Joe Abruzzo.
Slosberg is the daughter of Boca Raton Rep. Irv Slosberg. She was previously thought to be waiting in the wings for his HD 91 seat until the lawmaker terms out in 2018, but the newly-revised Senate map created an opportunity for the 34-year-old.
Rep. Slosberg told Florida Politics Emily was encouraged to run for the seat by Abruzzo himself, for whom the younger Slosberg worked as an aide.
Slosberg likely faces a challenge from Democratic Rep. Bobby Powell, depending on how the final Senate districts shake out.
The Senate announced plans to renumber the districts Tuesday as part of finally enacting a new map after years of legal wrangling, but also maintains “complying with the circuit court ruling does not preclude the possibility the Senate will take further legal action in this case.”
Slosberg has worked for the offices or campaigns of nearly a dozen Palm Beach County-area public officials, including Judge Ronald Alvarez, Rep. Kevin Rader, District Attorney Dave Aronberg, as well as the Children’s Services Council and the Dori Slosberg Foundation, a non-profit group named after her late twin and dedicated to traffic safety advocacy.
Powell told Sunshine State News, reacting to the story: “Yes, I’m in. But I’d rather not speak for or about any other candidate in the race.”
