Florida executes convicted serial killer

Here is the latest in the scheduled execution of Oscar Ray Bolin in Florida. All times are local:

10:18 p.m.

Oscar Ray Bolin, who was convicted of killing three women then married a member of his defense team while on death row, has been executed in Florida.

Gov. Rick Scott‘s office said Bolin was pronounced dead by lethal injection at 10:16 p.m. Thursday at Florida State Prison in Starke. The scheduled 6 p.m. execution time was delayed until the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Bolin’s final appeal.

Scott signed Bolin’s death warrant in October. The warrant is for the 1986 slaying of Teri Lynn Matthews. The 26-year-old Matthews was abducted from a post office in Pasco County, just north of Tampa.

Bolin was also sentenced to death by for the killing of 17-year-old Stephanie Collins. A jury also gave him the death penalty for killing 25-year-old Natalie Holley, but that verdict was thrown out because of legal errors. Another jury eventually found him guilty of second-degree murder in that case.

The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected the final appeal of convicted Florida killer Oscar Ray Bolin, clearing the way for his execution.

The justices rejected Bolin’s appeal and request for a stay without comment Thursday night. The decision came almost four hours after Bolin was initially scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection at the Florida State Prison in Starke.

Bolin was convicted of killing three women, but the 53-year-old’s death warrant is for the 1986 slaying of 26-year-old Teri Lynn Mathews. She was abducted from a post office north of Tampa. Bolin was also sentenced to death for one of the other killings.

The scheduled execution in Florida of convicted killer Oscar Ray Bolin has been delayed while the U.S. Supreme Court considers his final appeal.

Bolin was set to die by lethal injection at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Florida State Prison in Starke. But more than two hours later, the high court had yet to rule on Bolin’s last-ditch request for a stay.

Florida Corrections Department officials say condemned inmate Oscar Ray Bolin has eaten a last meal and had visits from family members prior to his scheduled execution.

Officials say Bolin’s meal Thursday included a steak, baked potato, salad and lemon meringue pie. His visitors included his wife, Rosalie, and Dale Recinella who is Bolin’s spiritual adviser. Bolin was described as calm and in good spirits.

Unless the U.S. Supreme Court intervenes, the 53-year-old Bolin is scheduled to be put to death by injection at 6 p.m. at Florida State Prison in Starke. The attorney for Florida death-row inmate Oscar Ray Bolin says he’s filed an appeal for a stay of execution with the U.S. Supreme Court.

Bjorn Brunvand said he filed the appeal Thursday.

If the nation’s high court doesn’t intervene, the 53-year-old Bolin will be executed at 6 p.m. in Florida State Prison.

A man found guilty of murdering three women nearly 30 years ago is scheduled for execution.

Barring a last-minute reprieve from the U.S. Supreme Court, 53-year-old Oscar Ray Bolin will be executed Thursday night in Florida State Prison.
