One of Democratic Rep. Daphne Campbell’s former campaign organizers has filed to take over her House District 108 seat as Campbell attempts to jump into the Senate.
Fayola Delica filed for the Miami-Dade County seat Thursday and is the only candidate listed for the seat outside of Campbell, who announced Tuesday that she would challenge Democratic Sen. Gwen Margolis in the newly redrawn Senate District 38.
Delica works as a motivational speaker and as a campaign consultant. Before filing for the HD 108 seat, the candidate was working on the campaign Tinuade Pena, who is running in a four-way race for the House District 86 seat held by term-limited Democratic Rep. Mark Pafford.
HD 108 is a majority-minority district with a 60 percent black electorate and leans heavily to the left. Campbell’s only real challenge, electionwise, was a hard-fought primary in the 2010 election cycle that put her into office. In 2012 and 2014, the Miami Democrat faced little opposition holding on to her seat.
If she files to run for the Senate, she will bring about $8,600 in on-hand cash with her. Margolis shows more than $75,000 on-hand through the December reporting period.
