The Senate Rules Committee on Monday approved a memorial urging Congress to authorize use of U.S. military force against terrorist groups.
The committee approved Senate Memorial 1710, sending it to the Senate floor with no debate or questions, and only one comment from the public, from a man who was more interested in talking about abortion than the bill.
A House companion, HM 1319, awaits a floor vote.
The memorials are not subject to review by Gov. Rick Scott.
Sponsor Sen. Greg Evers, a Baker Republican, made little comment while introducing the bill, noting only that it urges Congress to authorize use of force against Al-Qaeda, the Islamic State of Iraq, ISIS, and all other global terrorist organizations.
Last week, before the Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs, Space, and Domestic Security, Evers said the impetus for the bill was an increased threat of Islamic terrorism reaching Florida shores, stating “Ultimately, it’s moving closer to us.”
