Tampa attorney Sean Shaw, running for the House District 61 seat based in Tampa, has received the endorsement of Tampa Firefighters Local 754.
“Our first responders put their lives on the line every day,” Shaw said in a statement released on Wednesday. “To have the support of our Tampa Firefighters is truly humbling. I’m honored to accept their endorsement.”
The Democrat is the early favorite in the battle to succeed departing incumbent Ed Narain, who defeated Shaw for the seat back in 2014. He’s raised more than $41,000, far more than his two other opponents in the race, Dianne Hart and Walter Smith.
“In Tallahassee, I’ll fight to make sure our first responders have the tools to keep our neighborhoods safe,” Shaw said. “I share their dedication to service and our community.”
Shaw is the son of the late Leander J. Shaw Jr., the state’s first black Supreme Court chief justice, who died in December. Sean Shaw was picked by former Gov. Charlie Crist to serve as the state’s Insurance Consumer Advocate from November 2008 through September 2010. He is also the founder of Policyholders of Florida, a group focused on campaigning against unfair property insurance increases on Florida families.
