As a result of the mass shooting in Orlando where more than 50 people died, U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz canceled a planned Miami fundraiser Sunday evening featuring Vice President Joe Biden.
Marc Caputo of POLITICO Florida reports the decision came after revelations of the extraordinary number of victims of the shooting at the Pulse Nightclub shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday.
“The thoughts and prayers of Americans today are focused on the victims and the families in Orlando and the devastating act of hate and terror,” said Ryan Banfill, a representative for Wasserman Schultz, in a statement. “And out of respect to those who were killed and injured — and to their families — we are just not going forward with the event right now.”
Caputo notes the fundraiser comes at a crucial moment for the Democratic National Committee chair, as she faces a robust primary challenge from Nova Southeastern law professor Tim Canova.
Canova, a first-time candidate, has received strong grassroots backing, including the endorsement of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
The fundraiser was to be held at the home of Stephen and Sabine Bittel; it is canceled until further notice.
