The formal qualifying period for U.S. Senate, U.S. House and legislative races ends today at noon. There are so many developments, it’s almost too hard to keep up.
Almost.
Here are five quick thoughts about the latest developments from Qualifying Week.
— South Florida Republican legislative candidates like Miguel Diaz de la Portilla and Anitere Flores have to feel 100 percent better about their chances this November with vote-magnet Marco Rubio likely back on the ballot.
— Really, Perry Thurston is going to just walk into a state Senate seat?
— The treasurer for Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, the Democrat who filed last night against Flores, is Mark Herron. That tells you she was probably recruited by the Florida Democratic Party and that she’ll have at least some institutional support.
— Strip club king Joe Redner has filed as an independent in Senate District 18, where he will run against Rep. Dana Young. Nice to see all of that legislative work Young did to “free the growler” — legislation that directly benefitted Redner’s son, Joey — paid off with Papa Redner running against her.
— Democrat Gary Iscoe is not likely to qualify in the race for House District 89, where Republican Bill Hager is the incumbent.
