Randy Perkins vows to get ‘Congress working hard for American people’ in first ad

Randy Perkins

Randy Perkins is promising to get Congress working in his first campaign advertisement.

“I am so tired of hearing politicians say if you work hard you can achieve the American Dream,” he says in the 30-second spot. “What are we telling the American people, that they aren’t working hard enough? It’s Congress. That’s who’s not working hard enough. I want to get Congress working hard for the American people.”

Perkins, a Democrat, is running in Florida’s 18th Congressional District. According to his campaign, the advertisement is meant to highlight his humble beginnings.

“I’m proud to share my story and tell voters why I am running for Congress: because for many hardworking people, achieving the American Dream is no longer possible,” he said in a statement. “We need folks in Congress who are willing to work with everyone, no matter what side of the aisle they are on, to get Congress working again and to turn our nation once again into the land of opportunity for all Americans.”

Three Democrats — Perkins, John Xuna and Jonathan Chane — and six Republicans — Carl Domino, Mark Freeman, Rick Kozell, Brian Mast, Rebecca Negron, and Noelle Nikpour — are running in CD 18. The seat is being vacated by Rep. Patrick Murphy, who is running for the U.S. Senate.

Randy, if you are going to be on promoting yourself, at least use proper grammar on your commercials. “Nobody is going to work harder than me?????” Come on – I’m all for your agenda, but at least make sure your commercials are accurate! That should be “like I am”. If a politician doesn’t use proper grammar, what are we teaching our children?

“. . . than I.”, Jennifer. Your suggestion is incorrect and changes the meaning. The verb, whether ‘work’, ‘will’ or other, can be left out since it reflexes back to ‘work’ due to the comparative structure.

I heard the same and was disappointed, but posting this on-line was rude. Sending an email to the office might be better received. There is no reason to attempt to shame and undermine a man looking to make a positive difference in the community by judging his speech patterns in a pubic forum. How will be get good men and women to run for office is public ridicule is the norm.

It might be interesting to know that Florida schools had stopped teaching grammar in grade school for years while FCAT was used. Students were put at a disadvantage. We may be grammar nerds, but most aren’t.

Good luck, Mr. Perkins! I am looking forward to hearing more.
