Marco Rubio raised more than $2 million in eight days.
Federal campaign finance records show Rubio raised more than $2.2 million in the first week of his re-election campaign. That sum includes more than $275,000 in unitemized contributions, typically smaller contributions from individuals.
Rubio announced he was running for re-election June 22, just days before the qualifying deadline. That gave him about a week to raise money before June 30, the end of the second quarter.
Records show his campaign received contributions from the National Republican Senatorial Committee; Country First PAC, which backs Sen. John McCain; the Fund for Conservative Future, the political committee backing Jim Inhofe; and Heartland Values PAC, Sen. John Thune’s PAC.
The Miami Republican’s re-election campaign also received a contribution from Carlos Lopez-Cantera’s Senate campaign. Lopez-Cantera, the state’s lieutenant governor, dropped his Senate bid when Rubio announced he was running for re-election.
Records show Rubio’s campaign spent $173,870 during the brief fundraising period. That sum included the $10,440 filing fee to run for re-election. He ended the fundraising period with $2.03 million cash on hand.
Rubio faces Carlos Beruff in the Aug. 30 Republican primary. Beruff’s fundraising totals for the second quarter of 2016 were not immediately available on the Federal Election Commission website.
