Miami Republican Sen. Anitere Flores raised another $37,600 in contributions between July 30 and Aug. 5, further increasing her advantage over Democratic challenger Debbie Mucarsel-Powell.
Flores’ donor roll included $1,000 checks from several health care-related political committees, though her total was offset by $61,200 in expenditures, including a $57,525 payment to PR Concepts for a media buy and another $3,000 for campaign staff salaries.
After spending, Flores had nearly $340,000 cash-on-hand in her campaign account. Her committee, “Floridians for Strong Leadership,” raised an additional $69,000 during the one-week reporting period and has more than $430,000 on hand.
Mucarsel-Powell, who runs her own company, hasn’t posted her Aug. 5 report yet, though she had about $44,500 on hand through July 29. The majority of her funds have come in through individual donors, including three checks for the campaign maximum of $1,000, in her most recent report.
Mucarsel-Powell entered the SD 29 race the day before the candidate qualifying deadline and is Flores’ only major-party opponent this cycle.
The newly redrawn district covers a large part of western and southern Miami-Dade County as well as Monroe County. According to district statistics, Republicans have a two-point edge over Democrats in voter registrations, though President Barack Obama carried the seat by five points in his 2012 re-election campaign.
