A former Boca Raton city employee who rose to become its mayor also has become president of the Florida League of Cities.

Susan Haynie, a 44-year resident of the city, was installed Monday at the organization’s yearly conference in Hollywood.

“We all recognize that the best government is the one closest to the people,” she said in a statement. “Working together through the Florida League of Cities, we can enhance the single most important function of government—protecting our citizens.”

Haynie’s signature policy initiative for her term will be “Safe Cities, Safe Florida,” she said.

It will focus on training city workers on public safety; providing citizens with online and other educational material and partnering with agencies and organizations to create “a network of experts for city officials to turn to when needed.”

The league “is the united voice for Florida’s 412 municipal governments, and since 1922 has promoted self-government at the local level,” according to a press release.

Haynie graduated from Lynn University and is certified in Traffic Engineering Studies by the Georgia Institute of Technology and Northwestern University. She began her career as an engineering analyst for the City of Boca Raton.

Haynie, who has five adult children, is Boca Raton’s 43rd mayor. She is now serving her fifth term on City Council.
