Florida Conservation Voters, an environmental group initially formed to support the Water and Land Conservation Amendment on the 2014 ballot, is endorsing Tampa Democrat Bob Buesing in his race for the state Senate District 18 seat.

Buesing is running for the seat against Republican Dana Young and independent candidates Joe Redner and Sheldon Upthegrove.

Aliki Moncrief, the executive director of Florida Conservation Voters, has written that environmental values transcend party politics, and in fact the organization tapped two Republicans out of their five endorsements leading into last week’s primary, Thad Altman in House District 52 and Eric Grall in HD 54.

“Bob Buesing will be an outstanding advocate for Florida’s waterways, beaches, and conservation lands,” said Moncrief. “Bob has a lifetime of leadership on behalf of the Tampa Bay community and will be a courageous environmental ally as a state senator. His voice will be needed as we work to ban fracking in Florida, protect our waterways, and build a plan to mitigate the effects of sea-level rise.”

“I am honored to have the support of Florida Conservation Voters,” said Buesing. “Preserving our precious Florida environment is critical to our way of life; our economy, tourism and recreation depend on it. I am committed to ensuring the long-term sustainability of our resources by working with local governments to ban dangerous practices such as fracking. Our community deserves a senator who will stand up to special interests and work to defend our remarkable waters and public lands for future generations.”

Florida Conservation Voters say their mission is to elect leaders who represent the conservation values of everyday Floridians.
