Assessing Hermine: Citizens Insurance pays $90,000 in storm claims

Florida’s insurer of last resort has paid more than $90,000 in Hurricane Hermine claims.

That was the tally as of Friday afternoon, with 618 claims still being processed.

“Most of the claims have been filed for the Tampa Bay area — relatively far from where the storm landed,” said Michael Peltier, spokesman for Citizens Property Insurance Corp.

Hermine made landfall early the morning of Sept. 2 in the Panhandle. But Tampa Bay absorbed heavy rainfall, generating insurance claims.

Pinellas County led with 240 claims, followed by Pasco with 135, Hernando with 78, and Hillsborough with 56.

Leon County, where some customers went without electricity for about a week, produced 19 claims with Citizens — Miami-Dade, by contrast, had 23. Taylor County saw 31 claims and Citrus 28.

In all, Citizens received 793 residential, commercial and coastal property claims post-Hermine from 41 counties. The total payout thus far is $90,456.68.

The Florida Department of Insurance Regulation last updated its Hermine scoreboard Sept. 10. At that time, estimated losses amounted to $67 million.
