Randy Perkins pours another $1 million of his own money into CD 18 race

Randy Perkins

Democratic congressional candidate Randy Perkins put another $1 million into his campaign for Florida’s 18th Congressional District over the weekend, according to a new filing with the Federal Elections Commission.

Perkins previously put nearly $6 million of his own money into his campaign, including a pair of loans adding up to $1.75 million that he converted to contributions in a Sept. 16 filing with the FEC.

Only about 10 percent of Perkins’ total fundraising — about $687,000 — has come from individual contributions, and through Sept. 30, he had about $277,000 of that money on hand.

Perkins, a businessman, is running against Republican Brian Mast, a veteran and double amputee, in the CD 18 race.

Mast had about $415,000 on hand on Sept. 30 and has raised about $1.9 million so far this cycle, none of it through loans. His most recent filing, from Oct. 21, shows another $22,500 in individual contributions.

CD 18 covers the whole of St. Lucie and Martin counties as well as part of northern Palm Beach County.

The seat opened up when Democratic U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy decided to forego re-election to run for Republican U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio’s Senate seat.

Voter registrations are near even between Republicans and Democrats, and the district narrowly voted for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney four years ago.
