Florida Democrats edge Republicans in fundraising

In the last few weeks leading up to this year’s crucial election Florida’s two political parties and affiliated committees took in millions from corporations and other interest groups.

Campaign fundraising reports filed late Friday showed the Florida Democratic Party raised $12.3 million in cash since late August. The Republican Party of Florida and a separate GOP committee that raises money for state Senate candidates raised $11.6 million.

Republicans control the Florida Legislature and governor’s mansion and usually raise more than Democrats. But a split among GOP leaders has fragmented their efforts. Gov. Rick Scott has stopped raising money for the party.

Money flowed into campaign accounts from both parties from major businesses such Disney as well as sugar growers and gambling interests. Democrats received backing from unions and trial lawyers.
