The U.S. Department of Labor announced the disbursment of over $111 million in “America’s Promise” grants Friday, with over $4 million headed to Florida.
Florida State College — Jacksonville will get $1.804 million; the Brevard Workforce Development Board will get $2.38 million.
These awards stem from a competition held earlier in 2016, in which the White House solicited bids regarding tuition-free community college programs that connect people to in-demand jobs.
In a press release from the Labor Department, Secretary Thomas Perez said these grants exemplified “the Obama administration’s unprecedented investment in education and training programs … By encouraging regional collaboration and delivering on the promise of tuition-free training at community colleges, these grants will help strengthen local communities across America, and ensure that employees and employers alike are able to compete and thrive in today’s global economy.”
