A former top health care regulator and Lt. Gov.-elect Jeanette Nuñez will chair Gov.-elect Ron DeSantis’ Transition Advisory Committee on Health and Wellness.
Chairs Alan Levine, former Secretary of the state Agency for Healthcare Administration, and Nuñez will be joined by more than 50 other health care professionals, regulators, and former officeholders to help develop and implement DeSantis’ health care vision, according to a news release from the DeSantis transition team.
That vision includes “empowering patients and expanding provider reach, fighting addiction and mental health problems and protecting Florida’s most vulnerable populations while lowering costs and respecting taxpayers’ money,” according to DeSantis transition spokesman Dave Vasquez.
The committee includes three former members of the Florida Legislature, including Nuñez, a former state Representative from Miami.
Former state Rep. Jason Brodeur, a Sanford Republican who was term-limited in 2018, will also have DeSantis’ ear on health policy. He has previously chaired the House Health and Human Services Committee.
Former Republican state Sen. Rene Garcia, of Hialeah, also has a spot on the health advising panel.
The committee is packed with leaders from various private health care providers, like longtime HCA executive and native Floridian Bryan Anderson, recently promoted to VP of Government Affairs at HCA.
Tim Stapleton, CEO of Florida Medical Association, which represents physicians across the state, also will be chiming in on DeSantis’ health care conversations. Notably, the Florida Medical Association PAC endorsed DeSantis shortly before the former Congressman’s primary victory against Republican Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam.
DeSantis, frequently criticized by opponents for taking his time to unveil a health care platform, has centered his impending health care policy decisions on the value of personal choice.
“Floridians have more choices in picking out their cellphone plans than their health insurance plans,” reads an early portion of DeSantis health care platform.

Your vision says nothing. Floridians need details NOW. The low income, disabled and seniors are expecting quality without fear of losing care due to pre existing conditions. My brother is disabled and Medicaid is not providing help for 2 surgeries.

Not a single nurse or nurse leader or nursing school president. As if they are totally unimportant or irrelevant even though they are the best patient advocates. Once again, by and for doctors, hospitals, and insurance companies.
