Nancy Metayer, a member of the Broward County Soil and Water Conservation Board, has announced she’ll compete to be the next Mayor of Coral Springs in a special election March 12.
Metayer issued a press release Monday announcing the move. She’s bidding to replace Mayor Skip Campbell, who passed away in October at the age of 69.
“I am humbled to join the race for Mayor of Coral Springs, a place I’ve been proud to call my home for over 25 years,” Metayer said. “I’m encouraged by the outpouring of support from my family, friends, colleagues and fellow residents.”
Metayer, who has also worked as a community organizer and environmental activist, becomes the first candidate to qualify for the election, according to the Coral Springs City Clerk’s office.
Three other candidates have filed initial paperwork to open a campaign account. The qualifying period ends at noon Wednesday.
Metayer, 31, earned an undergraduate degree in Environmental Sciences from Florida A&M University and a graduate degree in Health Science from Johns Hopkins University.
She served as a White House intern in 2011 during the Barack Obama administration and has interned in the Florida House.
In the press release announcing her run, Metayer said she would focus on “inclusive economic growth, public safety, and environmental sustainability” as Mayor of Coral Springs.
“As a problem solver, uniter, and storied public servant, I look forward to engaging all of our community in a conversation about the future of our city.”
