Gov. Scott to propose funding increase for schools

Gov. Rick Scott is moving ahead with a campaign promise to boost the amount of money going to the state’s’ public schools.

Scott on Monday will release part of his budget recommendations during a visit to a technical center in Coconut Creek.

Scott will propose increasing spending on the state’s public schools by $842.5 million. That increase would boost the average amount spent on each student to $7,176 or about $261 higher than it is during this school year.

If approved by legislators it would raise overall public school spending to nearly $20 billion. That would be the highest overall amount spent without adjusting for inflation.

Scott’s office has not released full details about the proposal. But the increase would rely on more property taxes from local school districts.
