Florida for Care to hold strategy session in Coral Gables

Medical marijuana advocates will gather in Coral Gables next month to plan their next step in changing Florida law. Florida for Care, the legislative branch of a grassroots effort that grew out of the People United for Medical Marijuana campaign for last year’s failed Amendment 2 initiative, is scheduling a two-day meeting to discuss policy and regulations at The Westin Colonnade.

Ben Pollara, who served as Amendment 2’s campaign spokesman and is now the executive director for FFC, said the agenda is yet to be set. But he said discussions will include proposals for the upcoming Florida legislative session and a petition effort for the 2016 ballot.

“Florida for Care is working hand in hand with Senator [Jeff] Clemens and others in the Legislature to try to pass a medical marijuana bill this session; that would be our ideal scenario,” said Pollara. “(But) we’re collecting petitions (signatures) and if they don’t act during the session then we’ll get on the ballot in 2016.”

The meeting is scheduled for Feb. 26 and Feb. 27 and will include speakers from the medical marijuana industry and Florida lawmakers.

Florida for Care organized in 2014 to advocate for a tightly regulated medicinal marijuana industry that provides affordable access in a robust free market.
