Republican Cyndi Stevenson held a three-point margin to defeat Mike Davis in the special GOP primary for House District 17.
According to the Florida Division of Elections, Stevenson won with 42 percent and 5,173 votes of the 12,422 ballots cast. Davis, despite an overall campaign cash lead, took 39 percent with 4,706 votes. John R. “Jack” Capra received 19 percent, or 2,379 votes.
Stevenson, a longtime St. Johns County commissioner, recently received the endorsement of the Florida Times-Union, which said she demonstrated a “depth of thought and an open mind.” The Florida Medical Association PAC endorsed Davis, the third-generation small business owner of A.D. Davis Construction in St. Augustine.
Currently held by state Rep. Ronald “Doc” Renuart, who lost his bid for Senate District 6 this evening, HD 17 covers parts of St. Johns County, including the city of St. Augustine.
Stevenson will now face write-in candidate Mary Anne Boczek and No Party Affiliation candidate Judy Stevens on April 7.
