The U.S. will send a carrier strike group to the Eastern Mediterranean in support of Israel

Israel formally declared war on Sunday.

The Pentagon has ordered the Ford carrier strike group to sail to the Eastern Mediterranean to be ready to assist Israel, two U.S. officials said Sunday.

The USS Gerald R. Ford and its approximately 5,000 sailors and deck of warplanes will be accompanied by cruisers and destroyers in a show of force that is meant to be ready to respond to anything, from possibly interdicting additional weapons from reaching Hamas and conducting surveillance.

Hamas launched its unprecedented incursion out of Gaza on Saturday. At least 600 people have reportedly been killed in Israel and more than 300 have been killed in Gaza as Israeli airstrikes pound the territory.

The Norfolk, Virginia-based carrier was already in the Mediterranean. Last week it was conducting naval exercises with Italy in the Ionian Sea. It’s the United States newest and most advanced aircraft carrier and this is its first full deployment.

The officials were not authorized to publicly discuss the matter before the Defense Department’s announcement and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Associated Press is providing live updates on the conflict here.

The Israeli government formally declared war Sunday and gave the green light for “significant military steps” to retaliate against Hamas for its surprise attack from the Gaza Strip.

More than 24 hours after Hamas launched its unprecedented incursion out of Gaza, Israeli forces were still trying to crush the last groups of militant fighters holed up in several towns of southern Israel.

At least 600 people have reportedly been killed in Israel and more than 300 have been killed in Gaza as Israeli airstrikes pound the territory.

Authorities were still trying to determine how many civilians and soldiers were seized by Hamas fighters during the mayhem and taken back to Gaza. From videos and witnesses, the captives are known to include women, children, and the elderly.

Capital warships to fight guerrillas and partisans and militias!
Remember when Reagan sent a battleship (!!) to Lebanon!

i think maybe the warships are more for show than actual fighting. we give israel a ton of money every year so they should be able to slaughter on their own. israel is wealthy, i wouldn’t give them a dime, but i’m not president.

nice to hear biden is being his usual presidential self by making good and prompt decisions when needed and not politicizing the issue like trump and desantis have been doing since the conflict erupted. hooray for biden and boo for the maga cult response. if the maga congressional majority wasn’t infighting and politicizing so much, it would help. anybody that cares about Israel and other allies we support should remember the maga cults actions at a critical time when election time comes. the maga cult comments i’ve heard this weekend are all garbage talk..

we do what we do because it’s cheaper than going to war with a dictator from russia, china, or iran. alliances have to be kept and so on. i can’t believe i’m explaining this elementary fact to someone i assume is an adult. you must be a maga cult person. when hitler was taking over europe there were people in america saying the same thing you were up to when japan attacked. japan was an ally of germany and italy. isolationism like you propose hasn’t worked in the past and will not work in the present. pay attention to somebody besides maga cult people, you might learn something.
