Half of the port's cranes have outlived their life expectancy.

JAXPORT is securing cash it needs for a crane modernization project, as revealed by supplementary funding lists from the Senate and House.

The House is allocating $20 million to the project, while the Senate is chipping in $3 million more, partially fulfilling requests from Sen. Clay Yarborough and Rep. Kimberly Daniels that totaled $45 million.

Per the Senate funding request, JAXPORT “continues to grow its international and domestic container business, (for) which efficient and reliable cranes to move containers are needed.

“The funds being requested will go towards the purchase of one (1) additional crane and modernization upgrades for up to eight (8) existing cranes that will increase their useful life expectancy. Each crane modernization will include upgraded parts and necessary repairs to add additional years of useful operation in a cost-effective way.”

The House funding request fleshes this out further.

“JAXPORT maintains a fleet of 16 cranes, with 8 cranes nearing or past their useful life expectancy. The modernization upgrades will replace old parts and drives with newer parts, adding up to 10 additional years of life to the cranes, approximately $2.5 mil per crane.”

Worries about mishandling of the funds would be misguided, per the Senate request, given JAXPORT “has an exemplary track record of utilizing state funds efficiently and effectively.”

The lobbyist of record for this request is Joe Mobley of The Fiorentino Group.
