Police responded Thursday to an active shooter situation at Florida State University (FSU), where a gunman opened fire, killing two and injuring six others.
The 20-year-old culprit, the son of a Leon County Sheriff’s deputy, is now in custody.
Numerous Florida politicians reacted to the incident throughout the day, many offering variations of “thoughts and prayers.”

“It’s a shame, a horrible thing,” he said. “Things like this take place, and we’ll have more to say about it later.”

He later issued a video statement: “Casey and I stand in solidarity and are praying for the entire Florida State community. This killer must and will be brought to justice to the fullest extent of the law.
“I want to also thank the law enforcement personnel who were on the scene both from the university as well as from the city of Tallahassee. They ran towards the danger. They stopped this killer from influcting more harm, and there’s no question that they saved lives. We are also Seminoles today. We stand by to help in any way that we can. God bless you, and God bless Florida State University.”
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said his office is responding to the situation and “will provide updates as they become available.” He added, “We are praying for the entire FSU community and our first responders.” He later confirmed “with a heavy heart” that the gunman had killed two people, adding, “Thank you to the brave men and women who ran toward danger to save and protect others. Our communities deserve safety and action.”

State Sen. Shevrin Jones: “My heart breaks for everyone impacted by the horrific shooting at FSU, and our team stands in solidarity with the families, victims, first responders, and broader Tallahassee community. But ‘thoughts and prayers’ aren’t enough. Our country’s students and educators should not live in fear of being shot at school, and yet, thanks to politicians who are beholden to the gun lobby, we once again are forced to experience this trauma. Some of the students who survived the Parkland shooting in 2018 are current students at FSU — when will our leaders be willing to stand up and stop the gun violence epidemic? When will those who obstruct solutions decide to do the right thing and protect our kids and communities? It is shameful that government continues to fail us — Floridians and the American people deserve better.”

I am profoundly grateful to the first responders whose swift and courageous actions undoubtedly saved lives and brought a measure of calm amid the chaos.
This is a moment of deep sorrow for the FSU community, for Tallahassee, and for all of Leon County. As someone who walked those same halls and shared in the traditions of that proud university, I stand in solidarity with our students, faculty, staff, and families as they face this unthinkable trauma. Our schools, colleges, and universities must be sanctuaries of safety and learning — not places marked by fear and violence. Hmmm all those “Thoughts and Prayers” .. Wow how useful those are. Open carry, too young to drink but let’s put a gun in your hand, all part of the GOP mantra. It’s ok, GOD will protect our kiddos, right guys?

I guessed it two hours ago! In Florida we should simply abbreviate “thoughts and prayers” how about T&P?

Ah yes, Peter! Those thoughts and prayers. Empty words that mean nothing, absolving MAGAs and Republicans of any decency or basic common sense.

It’s time for FSU and the other state universities to seriously consider advanced weapons detection systems at their larger facilities such as those offered by Evolv Technology: http://www.evolvtechnology.com. UF Health uses the Evolv Express system as does New College, Manatee County Schools, Duval County Schools, Amalie Arena, Tampa General, Lee Health, and the Tampa Bay Rays to name a few.
More than 1000 schools use their weapons detection systems plus colleges and universities.

Thoughts and Prayers.
That’s code for “I’m going to do nothing useful but try to make myself feel good about it”.

When Republicans repeat the “thoughts and prayers” narrative…… over and over again……. I’m wondering what part of their synthesis evokes “thoughts” …. what exactly are they “thinking” about?

All Republicans and MAGA, even Trump, went right to “protect the guns” speech. In the US, when we have a crisis, or disaster, that takes the lives of our people, our elected officials used to work to create laws to avoid those events from happening, again. Why do they refuse to solve this problem? Why do they love their guns more than our children? It’s insane.
