It’s Election Day in House District 13!

election day

Today is the special election for Duval County’s House District 13, as Democratic former Rep. Reggie Fullwood seeks to retake his seat against Republican Lawrence “Jeff” Jefferson.

In June, Fullwood — who was previously running unopposed — was disqualified by the state after missing the deadline because of a pair of errors by notary publics.

One notary made an error on financial disclosure Form 6. A second notary, this one hired by the Florida Democratic Party to rewrite the form, failed to check a required box.

Fullwood later filed suit to challenge the decision that prevented him from inclusion on the November ballot, a Leon County circuit court judge rejected the argument. The state then called for a special primary and election.

In the lead-up to today’s ballot, the Division of Elections reports that Fullwood raised more than $170,000 in his re-election campaign, more than 20 times the $7,000 raised by his Republican opponent.

District 13 is a mostly Democratic region of northwest Jacksonville, Arlington and San Marco. Fullwood is a two-term state representative who won in 2010 by 67 percent of the vote and was unchallenged in 2012. He’s expected to win tonight without difficulty.
