A bill proposing a ban on Jacksonville city sidewalks in downtown Jacksonville was withdrawn Tuesday by Jacksonville City Councilman Bill Gulliford.

Gulliford, since filing the bill in 2016, has engaged with skateboarding enthusiasts in recent months over perhaps getting dedicated areas downtown for skaters.

Gulliford noted that “laws in the books” address the issues of property destruction, and given movement in a “positive way” toward those skating areas, the bill was better off pulled.

Gulliford, in 2016, was significantly more concerned about the dread specter of shreddin’ skaters.

“I’ve been approached at times by people who feel at risk by some of the skateboarders downtown,” Gulliford told WJXT. “They approach police officers, and police officers say there’s nothing on the books that they can enforce.”

Gulliford found himself on the receiving end of social media attacks for his position also.
