For what time did Bob Buckhorn set his countdown clock?

Tick tock, tick tock.

According to Richard Danielson of the Tampa Bay Times, Bob Buckhorn has placed a digital clock in office to remind him and his staff of “how many days, hours, minutes and seconds” he has as mayor of Tampa.

“(T)hat’s how long we have left to get everything done,” Buckhorn said.

Judging by the picture Danielson posted, the clock will reach zero sometime in the spring of 2019.

This begs the question: Did Buckhorn set the right time for his countdown clock?

Sure, Buckhorn’s second term ends in late March of 2019, so Hizzoner technically has more than 1,350 days left in office.

But does anyone expect Buckhorn to be there when the clock strikes midnight? It’s widely assumed Buckhorn will run for governor in 2018. That would require Buckhorn to irrevocably resign-to-run.

His resignation date can be made effective no later than when he would take office, regardless of whether he wins or loses. In this case, Buckhorn would have to resign by the the first Tuesday after the first Monday in January 2019 (Jan. 8).

That would mean Hizzoner has, as of this writing, 1280 days left in office, not 1367 as the clock in Danielson’s picture displays.

Time to get moving, Mr. Mayor.
