Florida State University named Sarasota Republican Joe Gruters as chairman of the Business, Finance, and Audit Committee this week.
FSU Chairman Ed Burr selected Gruters, a longtime Certified Public Accountant who’s vice chair and head of fundraising for the Republican Party of Florida, to the post. Burr is the new owner of the Quay property in Sarasota, one of the last open tracts of land on the city’s waterfront.
As chairman, Gruters, a prodigious fundraiser, will lead oversight on the Florida State University annual budget of more than $1.5 billion.
Gov. Rick Scott appointed Gruters to the Board of Trustees in 2011; he will take the helm as of the October 2015 board meeting.
“I’m truly honored to not only continue service as a Florida State University Board of Trustees member, but to lead the Finance committee moving forward,” Gruters said in a prepared statement.
Gruters, a Sarasota native and leading figure in state GOP politics, is running for the Florida House District 73 seat now held by fellow Republican Greg Steube. He lives in Sarasota with his wife, Sydney, and their children Spencer, Jack, and Elizabeth.
