Republican Rennie Heath is withdrawing his name from the race for Polk County Commission.
“After much prayerful thought and consideration with my family, I’ve decided to end my campaign for Polk County Commission, District 3,” health said in a statement. “Over the course of this campaign I’ve been overwhelmed by the support from so many great leaders and organizations from throughout Polk County.
“I learned quickly just how important it is to dedicate yourself fully to the task of running for office throughout the county. My work responsibilities just simply won’t allow me to spend the necessary time I would need to effectively communicate our message to every corner of Polk County,” Heath added.
Heath is a local businessperson born and raised in Winter Haven, where he lives with his wife, Pam. A graduate of Polk Community College and the University of South Florida, he served four years of active duty in the United State Coast Guard before returning to Polk County.
“Polk County is my home and a very special place where I will continue to serve this community in the same ways I have over the past several decades,” Heath said. “I can’t thank all the people who’ve supported my campaign enough for their encouragement.”
Heath served two terms as commissioner for the Lakes Region Lakes Management District; he is active in civic and community organizations, including serving on the Polk County Charter Review Committee and currently serving as chair of the Polk County Planning Commission.
Republican J.C. Martin is the only other candidate filed so far to replace Ed Smith, who cannot seek another term due to term limits.
