Cord Byrd is one of six candidates in the crowded HD 11 primary to replace term-limited Janet Adkins, and odds aren’t necessarily with him. With just under $9,000 in the bank, he trails Donnie Horner and Sheri Treadwell in the race for campaign cash.
Despite this, Byrd has a distinction the other candidates in that primary don’t; on Monday, he will be a participant in a forum, entitled Gun Control: a Loaded Topic put on by ONEJAX at the University of North Florida on Monday.
This “panel discussion representing diverse perspectives on gun rights and gun control,” moderated by UNF President John Delaney, includes Byrd, representing the National Rifle Association.
Other participants include the following:
— Patricia Bingham of the League of Women Voters, who chairs the Gun Safety Committee.
— Richard Collier, former lineman for the Jacksonville Jaguars whose career was cut short when he was shot 14 times by assailants in 2008, as he sat in his car.
— Eric Friday, representing Florida Carry.
— Wm. J Sheppard, a prominent Jacksonville civil rights lawyer, who most recently made news for representing the departed JEA Board Vice Chair, Lisa Strange Weatherby.
The event starts at 7:00 p.m. at the University of North Florida Lazzara Performance Center, and is free to the public, but reservations are required.
Before the forum, check out Byrd and Delaney on WJCT’s First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross; the trio will be previewing the forum at 9:00 a.m. on Monday.
