The 28-year-old Berny Jacques is an assistant state attorney for Florida’s 6th Judicial Circuit, but is a pure political animal, also chairman of the Young Floridians for Opportunity PAC. A native of Haiti who immigrated to the states when he was 7, he got his first opportunity when U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart brought him on as an intern in the summer of 2006, a gig he replicated the next two summers.
During his tenure as president of the Pinellas County Young Republicans, he worked on a number of successful campaigns, such as David Jolly’s special election victory in early 2014, as well as helping fellow YR’s Chris Latvala and Chris Sprowls get elected to the Florida House of Representatives.
Jacques identifies former Pinellas REC chairmen Paul Bedinghaus and Jay Beyrouti as mentors, and says he learned through shadowing state Sen. Jeff Brandes and state Rep. Larry Ahern during last year’s Legislative Session how important relationships are in getting ahead in the political world.
