Though it isn’t certain that Google Fiber will be coming to Jacksonville, Google has feelers out for a city manager for the project in Jacksonville.
A job listing, posted seven days ago, lists these qualifications, a preference for 2nd person construction throughout:
“The role of the City Team is to drive the overall business in our Fiber cities, including subscriber acquisition, community impact, and our retail locations and events. Another key part of what the City Team does is make sure constituents, including elected officials and leading advocates, are aware of what we’re doing and educate and mobilize citizens around it. You are looking for a new opportunity to work in a disruptive business. You are an experienced, hands-on leader.
“As City Manager, you are the General Manager for Google Fiber with responsibility for the overall business in the market. The City Manager will develop and drive the business strategy to acquire, retain, and grow subscribers in the market. You will play a lead role in bringing Fiber to market and growing the business through supporting and advising your local team. You will drive the strategic vision for Google Fiber in your market. You will work with a matrix of teams in and out of market to support local outreach to city and state government, utilities, businesses, and organizations.
“Not all cities where we’re exploring hiring a team will necessarily become Google Fiber cities.
“(If) you’re hired and your city doesn’t become a Google Fiber city, you will continue to play a role in an existing Fiber city or Google headquarters. Due to the dynamic nature of local government, utilities, and organizations, we’re looking for leaders that can be flexible.”
Google Fiber’s requirements include 15 years in management or strategy, an MBA or a JD, and “strong in-market local relationships with city and community leaders.”
One wonders how such “strong in-market local relationships” would transfer if Google doesn’t follow through in the Jacksonville market.
