Don Gaetz’s Vocational Rehabilitation bill clears Higher Ed Committee

gaetz, don

On Monday, the Florida Senate’s Committee on Higher Education passed Don Gaetz’s Senate Bill 962, which imposes metrics and a performance improvement plan for the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.

The legislation also requires the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation to submit a performance report to Governor Rick Scott and presiding officers of the Florida Legislature.

“Supporting adults with unique abilities as they work to find meaningful employment is an important component of the cradle-to-career pathway to economic independence for people with unique abilities,” said Senate President Andy Gardiner, who added that “setting specified goals and establishing a performance improvement plan” can make “Florida the national leader in employing people with unique abilities.”

The bill will improve the state’s Vocational Rehab program by establishing outcome-based metrics.

With 2.4 million individuals with disabilities in Florida, estimates are that population comprises a full tenth of the Sunshine State’s working age population.
