In an email to supporters, the Jacksonville Coalition for Equality claims that Lenny Curry opposes a referendum on the expansion of the HRO.
“The Mayor also made clear to JCE leadership that he is opposed to a ballot measure on this issue. No one wants to see the City roiled by months of divisive advertisements and hours-long public comment periods at every City Council meeting. Mayor Curry was very clear with his language. The Mayor did not say that an HRO update was not necessary. In fact, he took direct action to protect his employees,” the JCE said.
The JCE also lauded Curry for his moves, prohibiting employment discrimination among city employees and those doing business with the city.
“After the Community Conversations, and his own further study, Mayor Curry concluded that it was necessary at once to provide fully-inclusive job protections to all city workers and to employees of city vendors,” the email asserted.
“The City itself is one of the largest employers in Jacksonville. Mayor Curry’s actions will provide basic employment protections for thousands of city employees. When you add the number of employees working for businesses who contract with the City, the number of newly-protected workers impacts tens of thousands of people,” the JCE said.
