Florida Gov. Rick Scott on Monday ordered the U.S. and state flags lowered to half-staff at “all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout the State of Florida” in honor of the late Nancy Reagan, the governor said in a statement.
The flags will be lowered immediately and remain there till sunset on the day Mrs. Reagan is buried beside her husband, President Ronald Reagan, at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. The president died in 2004 after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease in the last 10 years of his life.
“Ann and I join the nation in mourning the loss of Nancy Reagan, former First Lady of the United States and dedicated wife to the late President,” Scott said. “Throughout her life, Nancy’s incredible commitment to her country and her family did not falter, and she will continue to inspire all us to live bravely and selflessly.
“Nancy Reagan made a monumental impact on our nation, and I know her legacy will live on, just like her husband’s legacy has. Ann and I send our thoughts and prayers to the Reagan family and all those who knew her.”
Mrs. Reagan died Sunday at her home in the Bel-Air neighborhood of Los Angeles of congestive heart failure, an assistant told The Associated Press. She was 94.
As first lady, the former Hollywood actress was perhaps best known for her “Just Say No” campaign to keep children and teenagers off of drugs. President Reagan was in office 1981-89.
