Legal troubles may be in the offing for the often surly Corey Lewandowski, the campaign manager for Donald Trump, after assault charges were filed against him in Jupiter on Friday.
Breitbart News reporter Michelle Fields claims, and witnesses corroborate, that Lewandowski handled her roughly after a Trump rally in Jupiter, grabbing her arm and leaving bruises.
“Trump acknowledged the question, but before he could answer I was jolted backwards,” she wrote Thursday. “Someone had grabbed me tightly by the arm and yanked me down. I almost fell to the ground, but was able to maintain my balance. Nonetheless, I was shaken.”
“The Washington Post’s Ben Terris immediately remarked that it was Trump’s campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, who aggressively tried to pull me to the ground. I quickly turned around and saw Lewandowski and Trump exiting the building together. No apology. No explanation for why he did this,” Fields wrote.
Breitbart has given Trump favorable coverage throughout the campaign cycle. It will be interesting to see the evolution of that coverage going forward.
The Trump campaign narrative on this has shifted.
“Perhaps she made the story up. I think that’s what happened,” Trump told media after Thursday night’s GOP debate.
Friday morning, the Trump campaign said the charge was “entirely false.”
For now, there appear to be no moves to remove Lewandowski, an abrasive presence even by the standards of his industry, from his role.
