Florida’s lieutenant governor joined over 200 people in Miami’s Little Havana to protest against President Barack Obama‘s trip to Cuba.
Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera is the son and grandson of Cuban exiles. The Republican running for the U.S. Senate said the first presidential visit to Cuba in nearly 90 years was “a sad day for me.”
The protesters Sunday morning called for Obama to end relations with Cuba. The Miami Herald reports that many waved signs bashing Obama for coddling the Cuban government.
Not everyone in Little Havana agreed. Alberto Buron, 92, told the Herald that Obama’s trip will open doors and “fix a generation that is distorted and destroyed.”
Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro will sit down Monday at Havana’s Palace of the Revolution.
