Democratic state Rep. Victor Torres has qualified by petition to run in the Democratic primary in Senate District 15.
Torres, a two-term state representative, is running in the district being vacated by state Sen. Darren Soto, who is running for Congress rather than re-election.
Torres reported Thursday that on Wednesday county supervisors of elections had verified 1,615 valid registered voter petition signatures. He needed 1,552. His signatures included 941 Orange County voters and 431 Osceola County voters. SD 15 crosses into both of those counties.
“Thank you to all constituents and friends from around the state who signed,” Torres said in a Facebook post Thursday.
Torres faces a primary challenge from Bob Healy, a a former board member of the Osceola County Expressway Authority who runs a pair of funeral homes in Central Florida. Republican Peter Vivaldi is set to face the winner.
