At the end of his meeting with Jacksonville City Council vice-presidential candidate Doyle Carter, Councilman Danny Becton told Carter he had to think it over.
And Becton backed John Crescimbeni, Carter’s opponent.
“It has been a pleasure serving with you as colleagues on Finance where I have had the opportunity to learn and grow and you have been instrumental in that effort. My two standing committee assignments which also included Land Use and Zoning are of special interest and a passion for me. I enjoyed the challenge and look to become more educated in years to come in areas which I bring vast outside business and community experience. It is my hope that I may have the opportunity to Chair each, if asked,” Becton wrote to Crescimbeni.
“I am excited by the thought of new challenges and opportunities to serve and possibilities to move into a leadership role in some capacity. Hopefully, I will earn your trust and respect in values we share of thoroughness and preparation that you will feel confident to have me part of your future leadership team,” Becton added.
As the pledge count was tied 7 to 7 between Carter and Crescimbeni, Becton becomes the pivotal eighth pledged supporter.

Crescimbeni, early on in his Thursday meeting with Becton, drew differences between himself and Carter.
“I’ve been here longer, I’ve chaired more committees, I’ve [sponsored] more significant legislation,” Crescimbeni said.
“There’s been commitments made,” Crescimbeni added, warning Becton to “look at who’s on each team.”
Clearly, Crescimbeni’s pitch moved Becton, who crossed party lines to support the Democrat.
Also a factor: Crescimbeni’s assurance that Becton would be considered for Finance when/if Crescimbeni ascends to the presidency.
That is no given. Crescimbeni was vice president once, but was passed over in his attempt to be council president years back.
It will take 10 votes to win the election at 3 p.m on Tuesday.
